Electoral Democracy

Social and political life in Indonesia is moving very quickly in line with the increasingly consolidated democracy in Indonesia, which is marked by the smooth implementation of legislative elections and direct presidential-vice presidential elections.

This development has had positive effects, such as greater freedom of the press, faster flow of information and movement of people, facilitated by advances in communication and information technology, and the state no longer being dominant as the maker of all policy directions. On the other hand, negative effects have also emerged due to this freedom, such as social conflict in several areas, rampant corruption, increasingly varied crimes, and so on.

To respond to such developments, our research has the following focus:

Firstly, studying the impact of electoral democracy on Indonesian politics. This is essential as it would evaluate the quality of Indonesia’s democracy and its ability to represent diverse societal interests, including ethnic, religious, and regional groups.

Secondly, our research offers a lens to examine the challenges and opportunities in strengthening democratic institutions, addressing corruption, and enhancing the efficiency of public service delivery..

Lastly, given Indonesia’s strategic position in Southeast Asia, our research would analyze the impact of Indonesian electoral democracy on other emerging democracies in the region which is essential for enhancing the global discourse on democracy, development, and governance.
